While summer heat weighs on the coasts, the Black Sea highlands offer a different world at a refreshing 20 degrees. We prepared a 5-stop highland route along the Rize–Artvin line, doable by car with short walks.
Ayder Plateau – Gateway of the route: 17 km from Çamlıhemşin, Ayder is the ideal starting point with its hot springs and authentic guesthouses. Stay the night here and set off at sunrise.
Pokut and Sal Plateaus – Above the sea of clouds: Reach Pokut early in the morning and you may have breakfast above the clouds. The wooden highland houses and Kaçkar views are a photographer's favourite.
Gito Plateau – Inside the mist: Gito is famous for its fog. The mist that settles in the afternoon wraps the plateau in a fairy-tale atmosphere. Bring a raincoat and a warm layer; the weather can cycle through four seasons in an hour.
Huser Plateau – Sunset terrace: The route ends at Huser. Watching the sunset over the Kaçkars from the wooden lodges is the best closing before returning to the city. Book at least 2 weeks ahead.
Practical info: Highland roads are narrow and winding; a high-clearance car isn't required but careful driving is. June to September is the best period. Carry cash — most highland houses have no card terminals.
