10 things to know before moving to the countryside

Escape Advisor · 12 Jun 2026 · 8 min

Moving to the countryside is a big dream. Fresh air, nature, peace... But there are critical points you need to know before turning this dream into reality. Here are 10 items that will shape your relocation decision.

1. Zoning Status: Always check the zoning status of the land you're considering with the municipality. Remember that you cannot build a house on agricultural land.

2. Water Source: Is there mains water? Or will you need to drill a well? Have you had water quality analyzed?

3. Internet Access: If you work remotely, fiber or at least 4.5G coverage is essential. Check carrier coverage maps for the area.

4. Healthcare: How far is the nearest GP, hospital and pharmacy? Travel time in an emergency is critical.

5. Transport: Does the road close in winter? Is there public transport? Can you live without a car?

6. Heating & Energy: Is there a natural gas line? Are power cuts frequent? Have you considered solar panels or alternative energy?

7. Social Environment: How do villagers/townspeople welcome newcomers? Are you ready to join local events for social integration?

8. Livelihood: Are you retired, working remotely, or planning to start a local business? Research the area's economic structure.

9. Climate & Natural Events: Research the area's flood, fire and earthquake risk. What natural events have occurred in the last 10 years?

10. Experience It: Before deciding, rent in the area for at least a month. See the seasonal changes — don't rush.
